Physical description |
Three-quarter length etched portrait of George Washington. Washington is in the center of the portrait with his body positioned slightly to the viewers right while his head is turned slightly to the viewer's left. He wears a tri-cornered hat with white trimming, an unbuttoned waistcoat, vest, and a sash across his torso. There is a sword fastened on Washington's left side at the hip. Washington's proper right hand holds a glove at his level while his left hand, gloved, points to the viewer;s right. In the bottom left there is a tree running vertically to the center left. There are clouds scattered in the sky. In the bottom right there is a conglomeration of trees and bushes. In the bottom/center right, just below Washington's outstretched arm there is a battle taking place in the background. There are equestrian soldiers with swords drawn, a flag, and a horse lying on the ground. There seems to be smoke issuing from the battle. In the bottom center, below the image, there is an ink inscription: "Washington/ General dans l'Armee des Americains". Translated from French, it reads: "Washington/ General of the American Army". The similarities of costume, pose, and features suggest that this image was copied from one of the English "Campbell" prints for the French market. |
