Physical description |
Platter, underglaze deep blue transfer. Large flower and fruit border. Church of St. Charles and Polytechnic School Vienna, Germany. Ralph Hall's Select Views Series. OBVERSE: Center field image of a large building with a central dome topped with a spire. The entrance is in ancient greek style with 6 columns and a triangular facade, flanked on either side by a large spiraling spire. In view also are trees and other shorter buildings with sloped roofs and similar greek-style columns. In the foreground is a river with a small sailboat to the right, and a bridge to the left. To the left of the scene in the foreground is a patch of land with a man standing in a dark coat and seated beside him is a woman wearing a large hat. The frame is themed with large (2-3") fruit and flowers (apple, grapes, peaches, pears) and various flowers, each unique, never repeated. This pattern is surrounded by a dark field 1" deep along a flat rim, with a .75" leaf pattern along the edge. REVERSE: printed mark "R. HALL's/ SELECT VIEWS./ Church of St Charles/ & Polytechnic School,/ VIENNA/ GERMANY/ Stone China." The mark is a solid dark banner with baubles on top and a white banner containing a dark flower at the bottom. The number 18 is imprinted at center left. Attached to the platter at center is a piece of paper (3.5"x2.5") handwritten in script reading "(Mrs.?) J.E. Randolph/ Platter sister of (Mrs.?) E.Y. Green AND Mark Thomas Gill/ Randolph's family one/ time residents of/ Chester New York." This paper is from the same source as the paper noted in 1949.01.029. |
