Cover of sheet music for the Battle of Prague Sonate. Top center of the sheet has the inscription on "THE/ Battle of Prague" directly above a draped curtain that comes to a peak in the center. From the center plaque there is a tassle dangling in the center. Beneath the curtain reads: "A/ FAVORATE SONATE/ FOR THE". In the center of the sheet is a profile postrait of George Washington facing left. The image is based off of Joseph Wright's portrait. Washington wears a military uniform with an unbuttoned overcoat and ruffled collar. His hair is pulled back and fastened by a ribbon just below the nape of his neck. Bordering the oval portrait to the top is a symetrical floral arrangement and to the bottom an arrangement of leaves. On the center left in elaborate caligraphy is "Piano" and on the center right: "Forte". On the bottom left in a curved scroll is the inscription "G. Washington". On the center bottom a scroll reads "President of the" followed by a curved scroll on the bottom right reading "United States". In the bottom left, below the scroll it reads "Price"; bottom right reads "1 Doll." Bottom center reads: "With Accompaniments" At the extreme bottom center the following inscription: "Boston/ Printed & Sold by Graupner No. 6 Franklin St." |

Published by Gottlieb Graupner in "The Battle of Prague Favorite Sonate for the Pianoforte". Engraved portraits often appeared on the covers of sheet music. Here, an image of Washington that is clearly based on the Wright profile takes center stage. Gottlieb Graupner, a German immigrant, was a composer, musician, educator, and publisher who lived at No. 6 Franklin Street in Boston Massachusetts. This image covered the sheet music to one of his compositions. |
