Physical description |
On lid portrait of Washington in an oval frame. An arrow and an axe with a banner beneath them are at the top. To the left side of his portrait is an eagle holding a shield in its talons. On the right of the portrait is a shield with four flags, seemingly American flags, behind it and an axe ontop. Beneath the eagle and the shield are banners. In all four corners on the top lid is the same shield and decorate, ornate designs. On the front side, where the lid opens is an eagle and beneath it is a bow and arrow, shield, and drums and horns. On the right side are two cannons in a cris-cross pattern, with cannon balls at the center and flags criss-crossed behind them. On the back side is an axe, arrow, and srrow sheath. On the left side is an anchor and and large fishing hooks. On the bottom is a design going aroudn the perimeter. "M.E. Hernandez of Cuba from S.S. Williams of Virginia, August 1857" engraved on the inside cover. Engraved on the outside: "a piece of the coffin of Gen. George Washington in which was deposited his mortal remains December AD 1799" "His Fame is Eternity, his residence creation" |
