Physical description |
Amphora. Also called a 'spanish olive jar'. Thick, unglazed ceramic body. Constricted neck with a thick rim. Tapering body that ends in three indented rings and a flat bottom. These were used in Mediterranean areas such as Greece and Spain for storage and shipping by sea. They would be stored in racks and usually contained oil, beans, lard, etc. They were in common use in the Americas from the mid-16th century throughout the early 19th century, but are extremely hard to date as they generally maintained the same characteristics over the centuries. Included is a broken-off sherd from the vessel (B), and debris that was found in the bottom of the box that the amphora had been stored in, that is some sort of flaked off finish with a glassy black interior. |
