Physical description |
The first plans submitted for a National Capitol were all rejected by the Commission. Finally those of Dr. William Thornton, a West Indian were accepted. Though of brilliant conception, the fact that he was not an architect, but a doctor caused at first bitter competition, wrangling and misdirection. Finally he was persuaded to com to Washington to direct the building himself and thereafter matters moved more smoothly. It was started in 1793. President Washington was much interested in the project and visited it often. Here we have both Martha and George Washington together with Hamilton and Jefferson inspecting progress on the Senate wing which was the part started first. Dr. Thornton is showing them plans fort the central dome. |
