"The Hymns and Ode written for the occasion, by a Member of the Albany Female Academy" Transcription: Funeral Honors, / To the Memory of / La Fayette. / The Exercises at the Church, / Thursday, July 24th, 1834. / [The hymns and Ode written for the occasion, by a member of the Albany Female Academy.] / 1st Funeral Hymn - by the Choir. / The wail of France comes o'er the sea, - / She mourns for thee, departed chief;/and we, the children of the Free,/Re-echo back the notes of grief. / They course was like the morning sun,/that lights two worlds, the east and west;/Thy brillant, glorious race is run,/Thou takest thine eternal rest./Columbia may not be thy grave;/Yet freedom millions of the west/Shall send their blessing o'er the wave, / To linger round thy name with Washington./ 2d. Prayer by the Rev. Dr. Ferris./3d. Hymn - by the Choir. / Sons of the Free! where'er ye dwell;/Oh, let your eyes with ears be wet!/Sound ye the muffled drum and bell!/For freedom's brightest star has set./Weep sunny France! your sky is dim,/Your warrior chief has passed away; - / Long shall it be, e'er one like him/Shall rise to cheer your darkening day./Weep thou Columbia! for the brave, / The great, the good sleeps with the dead; / He left his home, beyond the wave,/and for thy freedom fought and bled./ Then sound the muffled drum and bell,/And let the cannon's pealing roar/Mingle its wailing in the knell,/That tells the warrior is no more. / 4th. Eulogy by Rev. Dr. Sprague./5th. Ode-Choir./ The Patriots, one by one,/ The conqueror, Death, lays low;-/The last and best is gone, - /His knell is tolling now,-/Though on them rests death's sable pall,/Yet o'er their deeds no shade shall fall./ No! ye of deathless fame!/Ye shall not sleep unsung,/While Freedom hath a name,/Or gratitude a tongue./Yet shall your names and deeds sublime,/Shine brighter through the mists of Time! / Oh, keep your armour bright,/Sons of those mighty dead!/And guard ye well the right,/For which such blood was shed!/Your starry flag should only wave,/O'er Freedom's home, or o'er your grave./ 6th. Concluding Prayer and Benediction / by Rev. B. T. Welch. |
Historical context |
The Albany Female Academy was opened in 1814 by Ebenezer Foot because his wife insisted he build a school for their daughter before building the Green Street theater. Most of the early teachers of the Academy were graduates of Union College. It continued to grow in recognition and enrollment over the decades. Now known as the Albany Academy for Girls, the school merged with is sister institution, The Albany Academies, in 2007. At this time co-ed instruction was introduced to the Upper School, while single-gender education continues in the Lower and Middle Schools. Notable Alumnae are Jane Stanford - co-founder of Stanford University & Caroline Taylor, Member of the Committee on the Arts & Humanities under President Barack Obama. |
