Historical context |
Groundbreaking of the Bunker Hill Monument began in 1825. The monument, a 221-foot granite obelisk, was dedicated on June 17, 1843 with the largest Bunker Hill Day celebration since 1825. The celebration included a three-hour stately procession from the State House to Bunker Hill led by President John Tyler, members of the cabinet, and an assortment of dignitaries. Daniel Webster, orator and founding member of the Bunker Hill Monument Association, spoke at the celebration. |
