Quarto, bound in full red Morrocan leather. Contains map: Illustration of Andre's tomb Published by Mathews and Leigh The book's author, Joshua H. Smith, was permitted by Major General Benedict Arnold to carry private letters to gentlemen in British-occupied New York on September 21, 1780. three days later as Smith was escorting British Major John Andre across American lines, Andre and Smith were captured near Tarrytown along with the documents given to Andre by Arnold in an attempt to help the British capture the fort at West Point. Andre was hanged as a spy. Smith was militarily tried for complicity in Arnold's treason and acquitted for lack of evidence. He was then arrested by civil authorities and imprisoned for several months so he could be retried in civil court. Whiled imprisoned he escaped to British occupied New York and at the close of the War, fled to England, eventually returning to America late in life. This book was Smith's attempt to tell his side of the story. Readers are able to follow Smith's story with geographical markers, including a map. |
