Physical description |
Large fire-cracked quartzite stone, leveled flat on one side, the other side is rounded with remnants of black ash from fire. |
Historical context |
Used by Native Americans, quartzite stones were place in a fire pit until hot and then transfered to a container to boil water or into pits to roast or dry meat. They are often found on kill sites as they were used to extract grease from bones as well. Transfer from the extreme heat of a fire to a pot of cool water would cause stress fractures in the stone which over time would cause it to split in two in a clean, distinctive cut. Quartzite is generally found in the west, but also in some parts of Pennsylvania. |
