American mahogany Hepplewhite combination sideboard desk. Features two long drawers in center. Insets flank these drawers with a smaller drawer above a cabinet on each side. There is a decorative border around the top and seashell inlays. |
Historical context |
Sideboards were an English invention which became popular in the late eighteenth century. Hepplewhite, the premier designer for these pieces, commented in his guide: "The great utility of this piece...has procured it a very general reception; and the conveniencies it affords render a dining-room incomplete without a sideboard." |
