Physical description |
Certificate dated May 20, 1685 concerning the repayment of a loan made in NYC to be repaid in Salem, Massachusetts. Brief manuscript note in which Rowland Coxe states that Stephen Lescott, of Salem in New England, owes him 16 pounds and 10 shillings lent to him "at the green Dragon Tavern in New Yorke." |
Historical context |
Lescott did pay 2 pounds of the passage of Coxe from New Yorke to Salem, but still owed the balance. Coxe took Lescott to Court and this is a contemporary copy signed by Isa. Addington, Clerk (possibly Isaac Addington, the Mass. official mentioned in Savage: "Gen.Dict. of New England.") A very early reference to the Green Dragon Tavern in New York City. |
