Full-length equestrain portrait of George Washington at the crossing of the Delaware River framed in a black, wooden frame with gold inlay. Washington is in the center of the portrait wearing full military uniform including his tri-cornered hat, cape, and overcoat. At his lap is a circular shield with a "W" emblem. His proper right hand holds a baton outstretched in front of him. His proper left hand holds the reins to his horse. Washington's horse is standing on its two hind legs. Is is wearing a decorated harness and blanket with a picture of an eagle in the bottom left of the blanket. Directly behind Washington is an extremely large boulder. There are bare trees in the background. In the top left a group of soulders with rifles are visible amidst the trees. On the right, in the distance, there are a number of soldiers preparing to and in the process of crossing the Delaware River. Beneath the image, on the bottom left, an inscription reads: "-red according to Act of Congress by H. Phelps in the Office of the Clerk of Dist. OF of the US for the Southern Dist. of N.Y." In the bottom center, the title appears: "WASHINGTON CROSSING THE DELAWARE." |
