During the early autumn of 1776, colonists and the Crown battled for the strategic port city of New York. After the Continental Army lost the Battle of Long Island, Washington began to evacuate troops from New York. He found Harlem Heights to be an ideal route because of its rocky terrain. On September 15, the British arrived in Harlem Plains before Washington could evacuate. The skirmish that ensued was not devastating: only two officers were lost. This gave morale boost for Washington’s army motivating them to make a last effort in defending New York City.
