Physical description |
This picture shows Washington reading Lafayette's commission while Lafayette professes his best attributes and loyalty. It was during the existence of the so-called Conway cabal, that Lafayette suddenly received a commission from Congress appointing him to command an expedition for the invasion of Canada, but sent to him without the knowledge of the Commander-in Chief. Lafayette immediately went to Washington, showed him the commission, and said he understood the whole scope of the artifice, and asked his advice, at the same time protesting his complete loyalty and devotion to his chief. Washington replied that it was an honorable service offered, and advised him to accept. Although Lafayette proceeded to Albany to organize a force, Congress did nothing further to accomplish its expressed intention, consquently, after waiting three months, he returned to Valley Forge. |
