Physical description |
Washington standing in center of room with an oval mirror behind his head. There are officers to the right and left of Washington - many with expressions of sadness. A green top table hold Washington's hat and a drum holds his sword. Some of the public can be seen behind the generals. Inscription under image reads: left: "PUBLISHED BY CURRIER & IVES" center: "Copyright, 1876 by Currier & Ivers, N.Y." right: "125 NASSAU ST. NEW YORK" body: "WASHINGTON'S FAREWELL TO THE OFFICERS OF HIS ARMY. / At the old Tavern: corner Broad and Pearl Sts. New York, Dec. 4th 1783. / Entering the Room where they were awaiting him, Washington said, "With a heart full of love and gratitude I now take leave of you." Knox turned and grasped his / hand, and while tears flowed from the eyes of both, the Commander-in-chief kissed him, this he did to each of his Officers. The scene was one of great tenderness.
