"Letter from M. Read/ 27 May" "Public Service/ James Read/ Ary. Capt./ Colonel Henry Burbeck/ Command.g Reg.t Art.s/ New York/ mail}" "May 27 1812/ D. Sir/ I had forgotten in the enclosed letter to men-/ tion to you a circumstance which had been one of my/ inducements for writing to you. Edw.d Fitzpatrick the/ blacksmith so much esteemed here for his integrity/ and masterly workmanship, reinlisted[sic] last month with/ Lt. Gates under a kind of promise, that a son of his, now/ between 14 and 15 years of age should be also enlisted/ and the matter went to rest until my return. The object/ of Fitzpatrick is to have an opportunity of teaching/ his son, (who seems to inherit a considerable portion of his/ fathers[sic] ingenuity) his own trade, and yet, would wish the/ United States to contribute toward his support, as they/ will, in the course of one or two years, hence his full/ services as an artificer for his remaining term of service/ and at the rate of a private's pay, the object of my writing this/ is to obtain your permission to enlist him as a private/ in your regiment./ I am D.Sir/ yours respectfully/ James Read/ Capt. Art. Compy./ Col. Henry Burbec/ Command.r 1.s Reg. Art.s" |
