"Letter from G. Morton/ 14 May" "New York May 14 1812/ Sir,/ As past of the funeral Honors, to/ be paid to the memory of the late/ dear[?] Preisdent of the U. States, minutes[?]/ [illeg.] me directed to be fest.d[?] by a/ detachment from my Brigade./ This duty I have thought would/ be better performed from 12 pr. &/ have so directed it in my orders./ As there are but two torches[?] annexed/ to any Brigade, the gun in firing/ 75 rounds in such quick succession/ would get very much heated, and I/ would therefore request from you/ the Loan of 4 12 prs. from the U.S./ Arsenal. They shall be carefully returned/ immediately after being used. Major/ Marscin[?] my Aide who will deliver you/ this will receive your directions respectfully/ at[?]/ I am Sir/ respectfully/ General/ J. Morton" |
