"Letter from M. Stoddard/ 30 July" "Washington City 30th July 1812/ Dear Colonel,/ I am told, that you can forward to the/ Secretary in the mail from six to twelve of my military books/ at a time. Five hundred copies of Genl. Length's regulations/ were sent from Phil.a in this way. If you have discovered/ no other mode of conveyance, perhaps it will be best to pursue/ the one I have mentioned. I will endeavor to procure/ an order, making my book the standard, and providing. for such additions and alterations as experience may suggest./ Are we to be governed by the mobs? Look/ the transactions in Baltimore -- they are enough to chill/ the blood of a thinking man. Such conduct will work/ out the destruction of some men - and serve to increase/ the northern discontents./ Your very huml. Lieut./ Amos Stoddard/ Col. Burbeck" |
