"Letter M. Nicoll/ 5 Nov.r" "5 Nov./ This will be handed to you by a Mr. Cromwell,/ [crossed out: "an acquaintance of mine"] who is verry[sic] desirous to obtain a commission in the Army and from my/ acquaintance with him, I think him well worthy of an appoint/ =ment. He perfers[sic] the Artillery, as belonging to Gen. Morton/ Brigade. If an original appointment of a 1st Lieu.t in the/ 2 or 3 Regiment should be vacant he would like to fill it,/ if not he would accept in the Infantry. However/ such information as you can give him respecting original/ appointment will be serving him and at the same time confering[sic] an obligation on me./ Your son William so far does well, he is verry attentive/ and anxious to learn his duty, and if no change should take/ place in his future conduct, he will make a valued/ Officer." |
