"17 June" "Washington City 17 June 1812/ Sir/ I am engaged in making some/ arrangements for the Sec.y - especially in the staff/ department. The great question still labors in/ the Senate - and I believe the whole will terminate/ in a continuace of the Embargo - in sending a minister/ to England, accompanied with a declaration, that/ war will be denounced at a certain period, unless/ Great Britain yields to our demands. It is said/ also, that the federalists came into this measure - as there/ is some hopes of accomodation, and at any rate,/ it will keep us out of war for a few months./ Suppose you propose me to the Sec.y as/ Commissary of Ordnance. I believe no one is thought/ of - and I do not like to propose myself. Bouford/ will have what he has asked for - and with/ him I am certain of performing the duty./ My respects to the Gentlemen - and am,/ Sir, your hm. servant/ Amos Stoddard, Maj./ Col. Burbeck" |
