"Letter to Walback[sic]/ April" "I received he enclosed letter of Col Benjamin. I only/ have to remark that Major Headly has been continualy[sic] on the/ recruiting service, and never had the command of the Garrison,/ nor has The Col. never urged or express'd/ a wish for him to take command. Captain Van Deursen being/ under sentence of a court martial Igave the command of his/ company to Captain Richards, who being the eldest Captain of/ course took the command. The good of the service required it/ and I conceive the power rested with me to direct it./ The Major is not capable of commanding, or rather, has not/ energy sufficient to enforce that discipline which is necessary in a Garrison,/ composed of the number of men F. Trumble is and Col.l Benjamine/ has told me the same. He can serve the public much better on the/ recruiting service. However if he is to have the command, the/ respectability dont[sic] rest on me./ The Major is a button maker and is said to be a/ good mechanic, but has not a military idea, neither can/ it even[?] be drove into his head. The Officers of this Regiment/ are opposed to discipline, and they dislike any officer that is/ any way severe. Captain Richards of course is verry[sic] unpopular/ amoung[sic] them, and this is the cause they want the Major. I/ am verry glad that a Colonel is appointed, and hope/ he may prove a strict disciplinarian. Lt. Col B has no energy, and/ never ought to have had the appointment what is to be/ done with me, I will thank you to inform me." |
