"Letter from M. Nicoll/ 20 June" "Washington June 20th. 1812/ Dear Colonel/ I have received your letter of the 17th instant/ I do not like the poking[?] of [illeg.] so many recruitments/ into the harbor of New York, without clothing, [illeg.]/ organization or any other requisition to make the soldiers/ I should suppose it would be preferable to depend/ on the uniform companies of Militia of the city/ Finwich[?] is on his way to New York with Goberney[?]/ and Mc.Intosh's companies of Light Art.y. Col. Brale/ is ordered to arm[?:illeg.] with about 1.10 of the 5. Reg./ Altho' war is declared it appeares to me, that it/ executes very little feeling, verry[sic] there appears to be/ a totaly apathy. If Izard decides Wadsworth is to be/ at the head of the Ordnance Dept. Who is to be the Qr. Gen.l/ is not yet determined. Pike is in the Q.M.Gen.ls Dept./ What party of the play Stoddard is to perform I know not./ His directions[?] appear to be similar to those Col.Whiting/ performed while at the seat of government. Cushing/ is epected today. I have not heard that Maccombe/ is appointed to the ommand of the 3. Reg. Artillery/ Mr. Facy[?] permitted by the Sec.y to remain/ at the [illeg.] Henry./ I am Dear Colonel/ Yours Sincerely/ Mj. Nicoll/ Col. Henry Burbeck" |
