"11 May/ I received your letter of the 5 instant, which/ [crossed out text: "gives me much"] I am [crossed out text: "much"] greatly oblidged to you for/ information it contains. I [crossed out text: "am and all was confident"]/ never had a doubt of your frindship[sic] for me, but my/ anxiety to hear from you altho I know you was[sic] overrun/ with business, made me feel as if I was neglected. I/ wrote you on the 2d a public and private letter and expressed myself fully on the/ subject of my remaining in service, which I am anxiously/ waiting an Answ.r but still, your letter seems to Answ.r my/ private letter to you of the 2d., but says nothing of the public/ one, which mention[sic] my being considered a deranged/ Officer balance[?] from the 2st of June and receive the 3 Month pay as a/ deranged officers[sic]. I beleave[sic] I have a pretty good idea of/ the duty required to be done of Greenbush. I know it must/ be a fatiguing derenged post, as this will be all kinds of/ troops assembled there. The duties will be more difficult/ and arduous [three lines of crossed out text, largely illegible]/ that I have/ done, or what cause I have given to create, so many enemies/ to me is unaccountable. I have never had a word/ of controversey or disputes with a citizen whatever, neither have/ I ever disobliged one in any way to my knowledge. I begin/ to think I am not capable of commanding, and that my/ manners are repulsive and disagreeable. However no/ one can say but that any Garrison are in perfect order,/ good police, and the troops as well disciplined as the mate/ -rials would afford. I hope you will come through/ N. London the stages are as regular through hear[sic] as they are/ the other way, and shall be much disappointed if I dont[sic]/ see you./ Mr Joseph Kauman/ Merchant/ New York" |
