"Washington City 24th July 1812/ Dear Colonel,/ I have received yours of the 20th. In/ consequence of your sending the Guns, particularly the Carriages,/ to Albany, I believe the Sec.y is about ordering Lamb to/ send 5 or 6 heavy pieces to Niagara, where it is said they are/ much wanted. The Sec.y has received a letter from Genl./ Hull of th 6th instant - he had arrived with his detachment/ at Detroit, and in safety - any thing in the papers to the/ contrary notwithstanding. A Deputy Commissary of/ purchases has been appointed in New York. I suspect/ the Sec.y felt himself obliged in some measure to/ give the appointment to some other person than our/ friend Cooper. I believe it is contemplated to/ have a Deputy Quarter Master in New York - and/ if the office is still vacant, as I believe it is, I will/ put the Sec.y in mind of Cooper - tho' if he was to/ get Genl. Lewis to recommend him, I perceive there/ would be no difficulty - as I have understood, that/ the Deputies in that Quarter were to be named by him./ I am now playing Dep.y Q. Master at this/ place - my District comprehends Niagara and Maryland,/ and also Columbia. I shall tryn this business a few months,/ and if I do not like it, I shall retire from it - at least at the/ time when you make your winter visit to this place./ I believe the Sec.y will consent to let Dr. Tuner go on in the/ old way - but I do not believe that he will obtain the paymt./ of a Surgeon, unless you certify that he deserves it. The Sec.y will/ certainly employ him at the arsenal in whatever number of the/ position may be elsewhere./ Yours Sir/ Amos Stoddard" |
