"Letter to C. Gates/ 13 May." "I received your letter of the 3d instant -- with your/ returns &c. Your remaining at F. Constitution will never/ settle your accounts. Mr. Linnard the Military Agent at Philadel./ is the person authorized to settle all accounts of the agency, and if you can/ produce the vouchers to him for the wood furnished as you state,/ their[sic] certainly can be no difficulty in the settlement. Of consequence/ your staying at the post, will not make it any better, What ever/ money you have advanced for pursuing deserters must be settled in/ in[sic] your recruiting Accounts. And all the other Account relative/ to the Agency of course must be settled in the Agents[sic] department. If/ you have not got proper vouchers to cover the money advanced, its[sic] your/ own fault not the public. The Secretary has nothing to do in the/ business, as Mr. Linnard is the man appointed for that department/ if he has refused a settlement, then you have an appeal/ to Secretary, but not without. He therefore expects you will without delay make/ a contract for the passage of the men to Philadelphia: up on the best/ terms possible, which will be paid by the Agent on your arrival. You/ must take a sufficient quantity of provisions and water for the voyage/ from 12 to 20 days. You ought to have your Arms, Clothing &c well Boxed/ up. You must not take the drummer, their[sic] is music sufficient/ at Carlisle. You will have accurate returns made out of all/ the/ the[sic] public property of which L.t Pribble will receipt for. All the/ General orders, Articles of War Garrison Book and every species of public property/ belonging to the Garrison must be receipt for by Mr. Pribble: and a/ copy forwarded to me." |
