"Letter to L.t Williamson/ 22 May" "I received your several letters with their enclosures. I think/ Virginia a better place to recruit in then[sic] where you are. It certainly/ would be much better to find the 12 men with a Serj.t to Fort/ Wilkinson then to keep them, but a Waggon cannot/ be allowed/ to carry their[sic] baggage. It was improper in you to Hire/ two Waggons to carry the baggage of 40 or 50 recruits to F. Wilkinson as one/ Waggon was more than sufficient. Captain McClary marched from/ Carlisle the 24 of last month to Pittsburgh with 105 men and/ 4 Officers and was only allowed one Waggon. What the Secretary/ will say to it, I dont[sic] know./ You will receive your pay and/ subsistence from L.t Braham, who is ordered to Augusta, to replace/ L.t Barnes promoted. You will make our Acc.t of pay and subsis./ and forward them to him. I will thank you to send on to me/ immediately on the receipt of this. All the public money you/ have received for the recruiting service and by whome[sic]. And/ Credit all the bounties and premiums paid and then all the other expenses/ (Let the two Waggons Hire be at the bottom of the acc.t) that I may form/ some idea of what money their has been sent on to you./ In forwarding your Acct.s to Major Swan you must/ forward all the receipts for bounties premiums &c in short every shilling/ you pay on account of the public you must forward receipts with your/ Acct.s to cover them, else they will not be allowed. You may take duplicates for your/ satisfaction if one lost the other good." |
