"Washington July 30th 1812/ Dear Colonel/ An order has this day been issued/ from the Adjutant General's Office directing/ my son to proceed to New York, report to you/ and do duty in the harbor of New York during/ the summer months. Present beg you/ to take him under particular care/ and as he is young an inexperienced hope/ you will give him such advice as he/ may [illeg.] in need of. I will him to ac-/ quire a knowledge of Artillery as well as/ Infantry duty.
