"Letter from C. Baker/ 17 June" "Fort D'Etroit[sic] June 17th 1812/ Dear Colonel,/ I have received and accepted/ the Appointment of Assistant Deputy Quarter/ Maser in full expedience of recovering all ade-/ =quate compensation for my service, tho' follow[?]/ my circumstances of the 2nd. station of the/ Ast.[?] establishing a Quarter Master's Department/ +c. a Captain can only receive Six dollars per/ month in addition to his pay in the line./ The object therefore of this communiciation is,/ to request that you will do me the favor to write/ me on the subject, and if in your opinion/ my construance of the law is correct, use/ your influence with the Herr[?] Secretary/ or War to reclaim[?] for use the appointment/ if Deputy Quarter Master. Should you/ deem it advisable, I presume there will be no/ difficulty in procuring letters of recommend-/ =ation from Major Atticale[?] + Judge Withue[?]/ to their friends in the Senate, as well as from General Hull on his arrival at this post./ [illeg.] the best information we can obtain/ upon the subject, the Army will reach the Rapids in the course of Six or Eight/ days./ Miss Glass is shortly to be married/ to young Alexander Mc.Intosh/ I have the honor to be,/ with greatest respect, Dear/ Colonel, Your Ob.
