"Letter from M. Stoddard/ 8 July" "Washington July 8, 1812/ Dear Col./ I have duly rec.d your favor of the/ 5th Instant. I will [illeg.] to the Sec.y about the books - and/ contrive to use mode to get them on. I will attend to Dr./ Turner's business, and get him Surgeon's pay, if I can - the Sec.y/ will decide to-morrow./ Col. Williams some time ago applied for a/ command - he wished himself and officers, as war was declared,/ to be put on the same footing with others. The Sec.y wrote to/ Generals Pinkney and Bloomfield, and authorized them, in case/ the public service required it, to give the officers of Engineers/ such commands as they were entitled to from their rank./ Pike and Macomb are Colonels - the first of/ the Regiment at present under Brearley - and the second/ of the 3.d Reg.t of Artillery. Cushing is adj.t Gen.l. Light Inspect./ Gen.l and Armstrong Brigadier General. We have got the/ business settled as to 13 units. The law confers it on every/ officer, after he has served 10 years in one grade - and/ the President can confer it on any officer for meritorious/ services. The consequence is, that you will be a Brig. Gen.l/ by brevet and command Armstrong and others appointed/ during their present sessions - and an officer, with a [illeg.]/ who commands a District or post, is entitled to the/ pay and imoluments of his brevet rank - here you/ perceive, that you will be able, wherever you command,/ to receive the compensation of a Brig. Gen.l. Maiker[?],/ the two Freemans, and Capt. Beale will be brevetted./ Pike will be with you shortly - and probably Macomb/ also. My respects to the Gentlemen and am,/ Sir, your very humble serv./ Amos Stoddard/ Col. Burbeck" |
