"Letter to Walbeck/ 17 March" "Public Service/ B. Clemfortt/ Henry Burbeck/ Washington City"[This address is probably present because Burbeck used a scrap of paper from an unrelated received letter.] [The first three lines are written on a separate sheet of paper pasted over other text at the top of the paper: "17 March/ I received your letter of the 6 and 12 March with its/ enclosures. The continuation of the Northerly winds has/ prevented the vessel with the old hon[?] arriving"] "accordingly. I wish my letter had arrived in time to have prevent.d/ Lewis from going to Carlisle, however we must do the best we/ can with the deserters. I will forward to you in a day or two/ the promotions and appointment in the Army with your commission. I did not expect that a recruiting party would be of any service/ to send to Baltimore and of course am not disappoint.d/ William Lenox/ in their success. Lieut. Livingston has resign.d from St. Louis to/ to[sic] Fort Adams, except one company, but whether that will be infantry/ or Artillery I cant[sic] say. Col.l Cushing is to take command of them/ that you see the troops will all finally floating on the Mississippi" [Text under the pasted paper] "You are to consider yourself in the recruiting service/ and will join Captain Stoddard at Providence [text cut off]/ N. London for that purpose and take his instruction/ accordingly." |
