"Letter from L.t Perkins/ 4 June" "Dear Colonel/ City of Washington/ June 4th 1812/ I avail myself of a leisure moment to forward/ you the Return of my little Detachment for May last, you will/ see that Recruiting has been Dull with me, + probably will/ Continue so, as the Materials which usually Compose Ar-/ mies are now mostly [illeg.] from this quater; Captain/ McIntosh of the Light Artillery on Sunday last left this/ with about 70, that had been picked up by L.t Hight. Mr./ Lutz completed his contract + delivered me the Harness/ on Friday evening; on Saturday the Horses arrived from/ Alexandria + Mr. Villard having at the same time finish-/ ed the Carriages, the whole mooved[sic] off on Sunday after-/ noon about 4 O'Clock, to Bladinsbough, + are since gone on I/ understand to Lancaster, Col.o Finwick follows in a Day or/ two, Capt. Johnston also left Fort Washington with his new re-/ cruits on Monday, + has gone to Frederick Town. This quarter/ is now Clear of the Buz[sic] + din, which has sounded for some/ time past, and tho' I believe there is yet a party of the New/ Army at Alexandria, I wish to god[sic] I was quit of the whole/ and would with the greatest pleasure Resign tomorrow/ if I could. The business of the Qr. Masters department is, I/ find likely to be a source of perplexity; nothing but/ procuring transport, Receiving + Sending off Property,/ making purchases + paying money; I have scarce time to/ Eat + less to write. But I must not complain too much,/ you/ you[sic] Colonel have no doubt a full share of perplexity, of/ this I am Certain./ I will take another opportunity of writing/ more fully when I have leisure to do at Present. The Store/ House goes on very well, the Joint[?] of the 2 floors is laidd[sic]/ the walls considerably above; we have been at a Stand/ some time, for want of materials, which could not be had./ I am with Great Esteem/ Dear Col.o/ Your Obed.t Servant/ Sam.l Perkins Lieut./ 1st. Reg. U.S. Infy." |
