"Letter from Stoddard/ 26 July" "Washington City 26 July 1812/ Dear Colonel,/ You are mistaken in your ideas/ about Brevets. The law of Congress has added something/ to the general rule - because it provides, that when a/ Brevetted Officer commands a separate post, distict, or detach-/ -ment, he shall be entitled to the pay and emoluments of/ his Brevetted rank. You are entitled by law to a Brevet,/ and the consequence is, that when you command a/ separate post, district, or Detachment (after you are Brevetted)/ you will be entitled to the pay and emoluments of a Brig-/ adier Genl. The law passed on the 6th July - and/ you ought to have reviewed it before this. I tell Nicoll/ to send it to you./ your very huml. servt./ Amos Stoddard/ Col. Burbeck." |
